26-Year Old Makes History as Ghana’s First Black Female Heart Surgeon

Dr. Penelope Adinku

Meet Dr. Penelope Adinku, a cardiothoracic surgeon from Ghana that has made history after successfully repairing a 6-year-old girl's heart. This was her first operation and she is the first Black female surgeon in her country to have accomplished this.

According to Yen.com, Dr. Adinku earned a Ph.D. in Molecular and Cell Biology from the University of Ghana and finished her externship at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. Although she conducted her first open heart surgery with supervision, the operation was a success.

She commented, "She [the patient] had her first surgery which improved her condition and she came for the second surgery which we just completed." With such an astounding success, it's likely that many other Black women from Ghana will continue Dr. Adinku's legacy and follow in her footsteps.
